Did you also get this Fireworks error?
You may get it with Adobe Fireworks CS4 or even an older version.

After some Searching on the internet I got solutions related to the Fonts installed, suggesting to uninstall (delete) some of these or even all of them, to get Fireworks working.

I downloaded and tried a couple font applications to find corrupted font files but even so, the problem persisted.
I re-installed the program, but I still got the same error.

I also tried installing the Fireworks patch, which you can get and try here:
http://www.adobe.com/support/fireworks/downloads_updaters.html

But, what worked for me was to delete the user preferences file, which is located here:
Windows XP:

[Drive, C:]\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Adobe\Fireworks CS4\[language]\Fireworks CS4 Panel Prefs.xml

Windows Vista:
[Drive, C:]\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Fireworks CS4\[language]\Fireworks CS4 Panel Prefs.xml

UPDATE: Note that "CS4" could be "CS5", depending upon your version of Fireworks (thanks to Ed for noticing this).

[Drive, C:] is typically C:\
[username] is the username that you used to logon to windows.
[language] is the language that you use with Fireworks, such as "English"

So, if Windows XP is installed to drive C:\, your username is John and your language is English, the path would be,
C:\Documents and Settings\John\Application Data\Adobe\Fireworks CS4\English\Fireworks CS4 Panel Prefs.xml.

Similarly for Windows Vista would be,
C:\Users\John\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Fireworks CS4\English\Fireworks CS4 Panel Prefs.xml.

Rename the file and then start Fireworks. You might also need to rename the backup file (the one with the .bak extension).

The file will be re-created and the program will start normally.

Good luck!

UPDATE:

Danny said:
I did find that if you have a text file (.txt) as well as the xml file in the preferences, then you will need to remove this as well:

Fireworks CS3 Panel Prefs.xml
Fireworks CS3 Preferences.txt

It's maybe worth pointing out that this fix also works for other applications in the Creative Suite, like Dreamweaver and Flash.

This worked for me too. Thanks for posting this fix. Adobe Tech support was useless. I spent 1 1/2 hours on the phone with them trying to solve this problem. When they couldn't help I found this post and fixed the problem in less than 1 min! Fantastic!

  • Nakis

    You're welcome ;)

  • tarek

    worked for me too thanks

  • Steve Shaw  - thanks

This fix worked for me too after hours of trying removing fonts and reinstalling.

    Many thanks!

  • Nakis

    You're welcome :)

  • Raymond Minnis  - Thank You -SO- -MUCH-!!!!!

I can't tell you how many hours I have spent over the last 4 days trying to get Fireworks to load again.. After following your instructions, Fireworks loaded corrected the first time.

I owe you a serious debt of gratitude!! :D

  • Nakis

    Only 4 days?
I spent a lot more until finding the solution (2 complete uninstallations/installations among others). And that's the reason why I made this page; so that others won't get so frustrated as I got...

  • alan fox  - Mac 10.6.2

How do I apply this fix on a mac osx 10.6.2?

    Thanks!

  • Nakis  - Re: Prefs file for MAC OS X 10.6.2

    5. Re-create the Fireworks CS4 preferences files.

Re-create the Fireworks CS4 preferences file to eliminate problems that a damaged preferences file might cause.

Note: Re-creating the Fireworks CS4 preferences file restores settings to their defaults.

To re-create the Fireworks CS4 preferences file:

    1. Quit Fireworks CS4.
    2. Rename the Users\[username]\Library\Preferences\Adobe Fireworks CS4 Settings\Adobe Fireworks CS4 Prefs folder to Adobe Fireworks CS4 Prefs.old.
    3. Start Fireworks CS4. Fireworks creates a new Adobe Fireworks CS4 Prefs file.

If the problem continues, then the Fireworks preferences file isn't the cause. To restore custom settings, quit Fireworks, then delete the new Adobe Fireworks CS4 Prefs file and restore the original name of the previous Adobe Fireworks CS4 Prefs file.

  • Matt  - What about windows 7?

I have this problem and those files you mention do not exist in windows 7! Please help, thanks!

  • Matt  - What about windows7

these files do not exist in windows 7 but I have this dang error! Please help :)

  • Nakis  - Re: Windows 7 Application Data folder

I haven't tried Windows 7 yet but most probably the Windows Vista path applies:

    C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Fir eworks CS4\English\Fireworks CS4 Panel Prefs.xml

  • dnm  - WooHoo!

Thanks! Only wasted 2 hours playing with fonts that weren't the problem. I actually had to delete (rename) the Fireworks.ini file before it finally started.

  • Nakis  - RE:

Sorry jamy but I cannot understand what you're trying to say...

  • jamy  - nope

no ofcours it doesnt my friend :p

but those folders are in the located folder
    c:document.....jamu......

there was nothing about language or fireworks i have cs 5

  • Nakis  - RE:

It seems to me that there was some kind of problem during the installation.
I would suggest that you completely remove the program(s) and make a fresh installation.

The above link (http://kb2.adobe.co m/cps/405/kb405840.html) applies to both CS4 and CS5 versions.

  • lizza  - thank you!

i've been struggling with this same issue and came upon your suggestion to delete the pref file... it worked and you saved my life. thanks

  • Nakis  - RE:

  • Adam Hart  - Windows 7

The ifle is under en_GB folder :] But it doesn't work! Any other ideas ppl?

  • Nakis

I haven't tried this with windows 7 so \i can't be much of help... sorry.

  • Sam Schuurman  - I love you for this!

Thank you so much for this.....I would have been in so much trouble without FW.

For anyone who is having trouble finding their preferences file this is where mine was located:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Adobe\Fireworks CS5\en_GB

I struggled for a long time until I found en_GB (English Great Britain)

  • Nakis  - RE:

    You're welcome ;)
Let's hope that I will have the same luck with the configuration error that I'm getting now with CS5...

  • Scott  - THANK YOU

A recent update to Acrobat killed my CS5 installation... for days now been trying to figure this out, reinstalled, etc etc... Adobe is USELESS with this error! Deleted the pref.xml file, works like a charm.

    THANK YOU!!!!

  • Nakis  - RE:

    You're welcome :)
Now we know that this one also applies to CS5 as well... ;)

  • kaimar2

Thank you very much, this just saved all of today's work.

    Thanks a lot

this worked for me too on Windows XP with Fireworks CS 5

    thanks a lot again :)

  • Nakis

    You're welcome re Irakli ;)

  • Brian

You champion! Same as everyone else.. days of looking for an answer, found yours and it immediately fixed the problem.

    Someone let Adobe know!

  • Nakis

    Thanks :)
I believe people at Adobe know by now. Maybe the think that the settings file is precious to their users so they don't suggest them to delete it and start over...

  • Brian  - Top Tip about this post

    BOOK MARK THIS POST NOW!

It will fix your problem with Fireworks but it doesnt fix it forever. It fixed my problem back in September 2010 but it resurfaced in December 2010 and I found myself looking for this post again. Once again it fixed the error. 10/10!

  • Ed  - Windows 7 path for the prefs file

On Windows 7 I found the file in this path:
    C:\Users\~your~username~\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\ ;Fireworks CS5\English
Once I deleted the file named:
Fireworks CS5 Panel Prefs.xml the error went away and FW recreated it upon exit.
    Thanks everyone!

  • Susan  - Brilliant!

:) Wish I had found this post before contacting Adobe and wasting time moving my fonts around!

    thank you so very much

  • Nakis

    You're welcome.
You cannot imagine how much and for how long I was moving mine. I tried several programs for font managing so that I wouldn't lose any of those. Finally I found that they had nothing to do with the solution ;)

  • Pedro  - The solutionnnn!!!

I was looking for a solution for this problem a long time, and you helped me a lot. Thank you so much!

Worked fine for me too on XP with the path mentioned already once by Sam Schuurman in a previous post (..\Application Data\Adobe\Fireworks CS5\en_GB). My christmas is getting better now! :)
Thank You once again for this!
    Kind Regards!

  • Jeff  - Same Issue With Mac OSX

I am having the same error with Mac, the only thing is, is that the error comes up so quick that it doesn't even look like its creating the prefs file. There is none for me to delete or rename. Acrobat is also having a very hard time, all the other apps are working fine. Same issue with both CS4 and CS5.

  • Nakis

    You're welcome sean :)

Jeff, sorry but I cannot help you... I am still a windows "fan" and I know nothing about mac :)

  • Dan  - Woooo

Thank you!!! Works on win 7 with cs5.. had to delete it outa the C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Firewo rks CS5\en_GB folder tho

  • Rob Emenecker  - Thank you!

Thank you for posting this. Firefox crashed and then would get stuck at start-up with the "An internal error occurred." Your suggesting of deleting the panel layout preferences xml fixed the problem immediately!

    You're welcome guys :)

  • Ishan Paudwal

    ;)) tnx a lot frnd ...... god bless u
    it worked 4 me

  • Madamqueen  - Worked Once!

:angry-red: This fixed worked great for me - ONCE! I was able to successfully run one batch process - then the next time I got the same internal error. It is NOT efficient to have to delete the offending .txt and .xml files every time I need to run a batch process!

  • Brian  - Works Every Time!

Madamqueen should read the comments carefully. The fix does work, and if the error returns (which is rare) then simply do the fix again and it works.

Maybe we should say to Nakis.. how dare you only create a FIX that only works once.. tuttut..

Nakis, you are a champion mate.. a fix that works.. how many others simply don't!

  • Madamqueen  - Yes the fix works

Yes, the fix did work. And it works every time if each time you run a batch process you want to close out of Fireworks...delete the offending files...then start all over again.

My point is...following those steps each time you want to use the program you purchased is spending "unpaid" time to fix a bug.

There should be a "permanent fix" to this issue.

  • Nakis

    LOL
    You're welcome.

  • Nakis

Madamqueen maybe it would be better if you convert the batch process to a batch file that would work with the click of a button, every time :)

  • T Griffin  - Worked like a Charm

This worked immediately. Thanks so much for posting!! :D

  • manu  - Thnak you so much

    Thanks, Thanks!

  • Lisa  - Wow! Thanks

This is exactly what I needed. Thanks for the quick fix.

  • Nakis

    You're welcome :)

  • ldeatley  - Thank you!

I would never figure this out on my own.. this worked like magic!! :D

  • Nakis

    You're welcome :)

  • Joe

Thank you. Your help is better than Adobe Support although this bug must be resolving for Adobe.

  • Nakis

    You're welcome :)
It has been addressed by them (sort of):

  • Nakis

nah, I don't have such an ambition ;)
    You're welcome though :)

  • Alana  - Thank-you so much!!

    Amazing,have spent a week trying to find the solution to this - you're a star!! :) :)

  • Danny  - Lovely job

Excellent post - thanking you muchly. I did find that if you have a text file (.txt) as well as the xml file in the preferences, then you will need to remove this as well:

    Fireworks CS3 Panel Prefs.xml
    Fireworks CS3 Preferences.txt

It's maybe worth pointing out that this fix also works for other applications in the Creative Suite, like Dreamweaver and Flash, which I've also fixed in the past using a similar method. If ever CS goes wrong, the first port of call should always be to delete any user preferences. The Adobe support staff should know this by now :D

  • Steph

Fricking love you guys! You have just relieved me of a mahoosive headache that this internal error was causing me :) now back to work...

  • Anonymous  - This also worked in Fireworks 5.1!

This fix also just worked for me in Fireworks 5.1. Thanks!

  • Anonymous  - don't work on CS3

I've tried with Fireworks CS3 but it doesn't work

  • Anonymous  - Alternative for Fireworks CS3

I've disabled a QuickTime folder (Programs\QuickTime\QTSystem) and everything is ok. Fuck QuickTime and all Apple Programs!!!

  • tina21

I never used Fireworks and this is the first time I need to use it but when I go to my language folder I only have a "Fireworks CS4 Preferences" txt file...

I tried delete and renaming it. I tried the same thing by deleting the whole Fireworks folder but nothing ><

    I use CS4 and W7

  • Chancho  - Mac Help

Hey, I could really use some help. I have Fireworks CS5 installed on Mac OSX 10.6.8 but I can never get it to load. It just hangs without opening and says that it's not responding and I have to force quit. I have uninstalled and re-installed and edited the host files. I cannot find any Prefs.xml or preferences.txt. I find the language folders where they would reside normally but they are completely empty. If I try again it does the same thing and it does not re-create any Prefs.xml or preferences.txt. Am I over-looking something? Any help would be great.

  • Nakis

Chancho, I'm a windows user so I cannot help you with this.
But I can wish you Happy New Year :)
(with a solution to your problem)

  • Chancho  - problem solved

Hi Nakis, Thanks for your wishes. I hope you have a great new year as well. I am happy to say that I was able to find a solution. All I had to do was go to Library/Preferences/Macromedia and delete the Adobe Flash folder inside. After that Fireworks CS5.0 and CS5.1 open like a charm. The pref files are present and the Adobe Flash folder came back but everything is still working. :D

  • Nakis

I'm glad that you found a solution already.
It sounds weird though. Who knows... maybe the flash player has something to do with fireworks after all ;)
I'll add this as a possible solution for mac users (at some point...)

    Thanks for the info

  • Joyt  - FIXED!!

I can´t thank you enough for what you did for me. I hope you have a lovely year!! :)

  • tina21

hmmm i guess noone can help me >

  • Nakis

Tina, you say that it's the first time that you use the program.
Does this mean that it never ran properly or was it working and at some point it just stopped?
    What error do you get?

  • moorea

I have a similar issues. I am using CS4 on Windows 7. Thing is fireworks loads fine everytime, but I often get a pop of that fireworks has encountered an internal error while I am working in it and this brings my work to an abrupt stop as I am unable to do anything (not even save the file I am working on) without closing and reloading fireworks.

Do you think the fix will work for this issue as well?

  • Ayyappan  - Its Working...

:D It works on Windows 7 also thank you very much...
