Sacred 2 - Fallen Angel could not be located on your system. Re-install Sacred 2 - Fallen Angel and then run this patch again."
Does this seem familiar?
Sacred 2: Fallen Angel from Ascaron Entertainment seems to have problems with its updating procedure. This might be due to its DRM protection. A lot of different instructions have been given from many people, but not all of them worked for everybody. I summarize here most of those which I believe to be logical to follow (and which I also followed).
Before trying any of the following, if you have the UK version, try these:
2.0.2 to 2.40 cumulative patch (international version): http://download.nvidia.com/downloads/nZone/patches/sacred2/Full/Sacred2-UK-INT-2_40_0_0.exe or 2.0.2 to 2.34 cumulative patch: http://www.gamershell.com/download_37266.shtml
If the updater starts but stucks at some point, try replacing the Sacred2Updater.dat file with the one found here: http://forum.sacred-game.com/showpost.php?p=724529&postcount=16
If none of these have worked, then read on...
There are two distributors of the game; CDV for USA and Deep Silver for Europe. I don't know if there are any more for other regions...
You can find some of the patches at http://update.sacred2.com but the older incremental ones are not included in the list. Those you can find at Gamer's Hell patch archive.
I have tested the UK version and the links I give are for this version. For USA or other version/region you can use the search results page: http://www.gamershell.com/search/?q=sacred+2
You can also try Filefront: http://www.filefront.com/search_results.php?terms=sacred%202&type=2 or Fileshack (you have to have an account, which is free): http://www.fileshack.com/search.x?type=files&terms=sacred+2+uk&search_for=2&sortby=date&ascdesc=desc
Chose the file versions below for you language/region and let's hope they will work :)
Here are the steps to be taken:
- If you already have the game installed uninstall it and manually delete any leftovers. These are:
- Options.txt and Optionscustom.txt:
For Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Local Settings\Application Data\Ascaron Entertainment\Sacred 2 For Windows Vista: C:\Users\[AccountName]\AppData\Local\AscaronEntertainment\Sacred 2
- Save-Games:
For Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\My Documents\Ascaron Entertainment\Sacred 2 For Windows Vista: C:\Users\[ACCOUNTNAME]\Saved Games\Ascaron Entertainment\Sacred 2
- Log Files:
For Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Local Settings\Temp\Ascaron Entertainment\Sacred 2 For Windows Vista: C:\Users\[ACCOUNTNAME]\AppData\Local\Temp\Ascaron Entertainment\Sacred 2
Keep in mind that Local Settings and Application Data are hidden and that you need to enable the "Show hidden files and folders" option.
Here are some instructions:
For Windows XP:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/hiddenfiles.mspx
For Windows Vista:
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/help/27e9a81a-fac7-457f-896b-e0017a04a59f1033.mspx
File Locations can also be found here.
Also, there is a File Cleaning Utility for Sacred 2, which you can download here or here.
- Turn off your antivirus, as it messes with the copied files.
- Turn off Windows firewall.
- Close any opened applications (I had only Windows Explorer and Notepad writing these instructions ;) before running the patches. The DRM file check is VERY sensitive.
- Make a clean install using disks 1 and 2; don't install the Elite Graphics. When the installer finishes, uncheck the Readme and Run the game options.
- Update the game using the incremental patches and not the cumulative ones. These are:
Notes
These are the latest updates as of this writing. I hope that the problem(s) will be fixed, even though I noticed that during the installation of the last two patches the file check procedure was skipped; for some reason there was no file check. This, of course, was not the case for the cumulative patches, up to version 2.40 (2.02 to 2.40).
I read posts about changing the Windows TEMP folder to a drive different than the one that the game's installed to. I did try it but without doing many of the above. What I consider to be critical is disabling the antivirus. When I finally made it, I had changed the TEMP directory back to its original location and I had no problems. I also had plenty of room on that drive ;) (more than 33 GBs). I don't know if this would cause problems in case there was less (insufficient) space. If you're still having problems and want to give this a shot, here are the instructions to do it.
I also read about defragmenting the hard drive. I didn't do this either but, I usually defragment my drives anyway (every 1-2 months), so maybe this didn't affect me.
There was one interesting post saying the following:
When you install the patch 2.0.2 -> 2.12.0, the patcher omits the file speechhq.zip, which later causes trouble patching to 2.34.0(due to a bug in the file list of the patch, I guess), whereas the previous patches update the file correctly.
I can't know whether this is true or not, but I do know that it worked.
Thanks to Talia for providing additional mirros that support resume.
Good luck!

Thanks for the article, I am about to work my way through it. I shoulda bought Batman Arkham Asylum instead as I really don't have a lot of time playing games and certainly don't want to waste the little I have on problems Ascaron couldn't solve in-house..
